Shadowboxing, The Only Enemy Is In Us
Sometimes people see enemies everywhere. And we all are tempted to fear the differences that we see in others but we are far more alike than different even those like myself with the most skewed views on things. Many believe that the opposite of love is hate but I think rather that fear is and that only fear leads us to think that we hate. But fear is not real, nor is darkness, nor hate. There is but one reality and that is Love. We may think we see danger everywhere but that fear is irrational and as one of our most beloved Presidents said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” We have in us a homing device to overcome weak and puny little ego and all his/her attempts to derail us that will always return us safely home in the end.
Fear makes us do crazy things like start wars and fight imaginary enemies. One does not have to live very long to discover who the real enemy is. It is in us this imaginary extension of ourselves that we created as a poor substitute for our higher self. Our higher self is the loving and everlasting part and the imaginary ego self is but a shadow being that refuses to acknowledge Who and Whose we truly are. This character loves it when we fight him/her, or our brothers and sisters, and is willing to fight dirty and hit below the belt to keep us distracted from realizing that the fight has already been won for us and settled – we won.
Instead of tilting at windmills or shadowboxing imaginary enemies our time should rather be spent doing victory laps and refusing, and refraining to oppose or harm anyone even in this dream. The Bible asked some very difficult and often unanswerable questions, two of the hardest ones follow:
“Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud. You do this even to your brethren.” (1 Corinthians 6:7-8)
I repeat my original premise that there are no enemies, only brothers with the one possible exception of old ego, a shadowy creature of our own making, a pretender to the throne of our heart and mind. Only our higher self is king of those realms and qualified to lead and guide us. The war within us and in the world without is not of his/her higher design but the product of ignorance and darkness, fear and foolishness – the realm, stock, and trade of shadowy ego. Do not fight this silly shadow, allow the holy light within you to dissolve and shine away all darkness, fears, and shadows.
One last verse for you Bible lovers:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
To paraphrase a song that I love “He tried to be a preacher once but his music wouldn’t wait.” Onward Christian and all other soldiers not as to war but to a dance with sweeter more heavenly music.
