All The While Offer A Smile
Someone has said, “If you meet someone without a smile offer them yours.” In that way we all get to be philanthropists in the highest best sense. There are so many poor people in the world, or at least people who have yet to learn how closely they are related to true wealth, we who know should offer them our million dollar smiles.
An old song comes to mind as I write about smiling and the words go something like this:
When You’re Smiling
(Sung by Dean Martin)
When you’re smilin’, when you’re smilin’
The whole world smiles with you
When you’re laughin’, oh when you’re laughin’
The sun comes shinin’ through
But when you’re cryin’, you bring on the rain
So stop that sighin’, be happy again
Keep on smilin’, ’cause when you’re smilin’
The whole world smiles with you
But when you’re cryin’, your bring on the rain
So stop your sighin’, be happy again
Keep on smilin’, ’cause when you’re smilin’, baby
The whole world smiles with you
Songwriters: Joe Goodwin / Larry Shay / Mark Fisher
You younger folk might be more familiar with a more recent song lyric about smiling.
I Love To See You Smile”
(from “Parenthood” soundtrack)
I was born to make you happy.
I think you’re just my style.
Everywhere I go,
Tellin’ everyone I know,
Baby, I love to see you smile.
Don’t want to take a trip to China.
Don’t want sail up the Nile.
Wouldn’t wan’ get too far,
From where you are,
‘Cause I love to see you smile.
Like a sink without a faucet.
Like a watch without a dial.
What would I do if I didn’t have you.
I love to see you smile.
In the summer, in the springtime,
The winter, or the fall,
The only place I wanna be
Is where I can see you smile at me.
In a world that’s full of trouble,
Y’make it all worth while.
What would I do if I didn’t have you.
I just love to see you smile.
I love to see you smile.
In the summer, in the springtime,
The winter, or the fall,
The only place I wanna be
Is where I can see you smile at me.
In a world that’s full of trouble,
Y’make it all worth while.
What would I do if I didn’t have you.
I love to see you smile.
I love to see you smile.
Writer: Randy Newman
When the sun is shining – smile, when it’s raining – smile, smile all the while, as the saying goes, it will if nothing else keep people wondering what you have been up to. Even more I think you will find that just like a baby’s yawn a genuine smile is infectious. Don’t feel like smiling – fake it till you make it real in your own and somebody else’s life.
