Some Favorite Twins
Forty’s now the new twenty
No calendars hang in heaven
Take forty years off my age
Now I am just twenty-seven.
Some days back I posted a yellowed newspaper clipping with my baby picture and a heading that read, “Lordy, lordy look who’s forty.” I received a birthday party invitation in the mail just days ago regarding a birthday party being held soon for two of my favorite twins. I will not be able to attend but in honor of them and the wonderful twins I have known in my life I submit this piece. And, no, this is not intended to be a particularly sexy piece but I remember a great line in a comedy I once saw where the punch line after every sexy scene was, “…and twins.” We guys are such horn dogs but then you gals are wild cats so it makes for an interesting pairing always.
The first time I met twins was in my first grade class in elementary school. They were fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, who looked like the Campbell kids with read hair, freckles, and rosey cheeks. I was quite smitten by the girl of the two, but then I have always been easily smitten by the female form and face. I had no sister so the idea of having one who shared your birthday and so many details and even had so many features in common was fascinating, still is, but then I have come to believe we are all connected and more alike than we want to admit. Twins, though, those who know say, have a special psychic or spiritual connection most of us do not feel. Many of us have had close friends or family that we were so close to that we could finish one another’s sentences and almost read one another’s minds. But these kinds of things are often the rule and not the exception with twins.
I was acquainted with pretty blonde girl identical twins in middle school. They were behind me a year or two in grade level. I actually knew their equally pretty though quite different in appearance older sister. All three were members of a Holiness Methodist Church, in fact their father was the pastor, so many guys with fantasies of blonde twins had to search elsewhere to find girls less heavenly minded.
Of most the other twins that I have any personal knowledge of, except the soon to be birthday girls, I only knew one, never saw the two together, nor met the other. The birthday girl twins I only met separately after they were grown and I have never seen them together except in pictures, but have come to know and love them both. They are the second and third lovely daughters of one of my childhood sweethearts, we were both fourteen. Had she not met an older boy at the end of our short summer of holding hands and kissing I might have one day been the daddy of those wonderful twin girls and their equally wonderful older sister. My Mama had twin boys before me but they died shortly after birth so I never got to know them.
Today’s picture is the birthday party announcement that I mentioned receiving. The girls’ mom and dad are not pictured but friends who loved them too. Their beloved daddy Raymond passed when they were quite young but they had time enough to thrill his heart and he theirs. I am confident that he has been watching over them throughout their lives and will be a smiling unseen guest at their fortieth birthday bash. Party hardy girl I know daddy would want you to and will be shouting for joy on the happy occasion thrilled that his girls are having yet another happy birthday. Their sweet mama, many others will be as well, and me too.
A note of clarification, perhaps not needed. I am quite happy with the way my life has turned out. I have loved and married several pretty women and even got to be a daddy to a sweet daughter and fine son and a step dad for a while to two other fine sons. Twins are still a fascination to me. I remember my son Jay saying when asked to explain some mess or something broken when he was little, “That was the other Jonathan.” Like he had an evil twin. He was such a cutie. He still is.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
Lover of singles, marrieds, but especially the twins,
