It’s Magic
Many people do not believe in magic and perhaps I use the word in a larger since than “trick” or “magical thinking” as opposed to a more reasoned or rational based thought. To me, the term magic refers to awe or that inexplicable excitement that gives life its luster, its spark. Science or some people’s idea of science would explain away all the mysteries and magic but this is more a religious type of belief than practical science for a true scientist will tell you there is far more that we do not know than the few things we think we do. And the more that we come to know the more we realize that there is even more to know. I have some electric and mechanical knowlege about things but I still see the underlying magic behind channeling power through cables, gears, hydraulics lines, or a computer chip etc. It still seems more magic than science to me to flip a switch and light up a city, or turn a lever or click a few key strokes, and fill a dry lake, or move a mountain. Perhaps a great deal of that magic is in the mind that designed those modern marvels, or the thousands of man/woman hours that it took to bring those ideas to life. All pretty magical if you think about it.
I am always excited about getting to see some magic, slight of hand, tricks to boggle the mind. If you are like me, and all of us differ only slightly and then only in degree. It does not take that much to boggle our minds. Case in point, see how such a small thing can exited us, distract us, and cause us to forget where we put that cell phone or those car keys, or what we were about say, or that promise to ourself to not sweat the small stuff. It is all small stuff if you truly know how big you really are.
In closing, I recall three small lines with a lot of punch from a Don Williams song:
I believe in music
I believe in magic
I believe in you.
As my Jewish friends say, “From God’s mouth to your ear.”
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
