Satan Worshippers
For about the first forty years of my life I was closely associated with a group that talked and wrote more often about Satan’s power and influence than they did of God, the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit. Satan was blamed for all the ills and “evil” in the world and God got all the credit for all of the “good” which often seemed little if you considered all the press and lime light that Satan received. For some time I have not believed in Satan per say but as puny little ego, to me, the real “accuser of the brethren.” That is the literal interpretation of the word, Satan. And, yes, I do know the quote, “The Greatest accomplishment the Devil every pulled off was getting people to believe that he does not exist.” That quote is in the movie Devil’s Advocate and Al Pacino’s performance as the Devil is mesmerizing. I recommend the movie but still believe that the Devil, Satan, was concocted like the Bogeyman to scare children and manipulate people. I don’t have a lot of regard for any religion that uses hate and fear to control people. And Flip Wilson’s character Geraldine Jones’ catch phrase, “The Devil made me do it.” is a cop out. We do what we want to do and there is no enemy, no evil, but us, our own ego.
That is not to say that mankind does not do some “sick twisted stuff.” I resisted the smeller term but there are indeed acts that stink to high heaven. We have been guilty of the most heinous atrocities, many sadly committed in the name of religion, patriotism, or other good sounding words or causes. We steal, kill, lie and cheat in the name of profits or progress and even God but it is all ego. At various times in history religious people, believing their religion was the only “true one” have called and labeled others witches, heretics, and satan worshippers and mistreated them horribly even burning many to death.
I believe that there are Satan Worshippers among us, in all faiths, or supposed lack of faith groups, in fact, everyone of us who bows to our own ego has worshipped Satan by definition. When we think we are better than our brother and use and abuse others for our profit and pleasure it does not matter how loud we sing the praises of God we are serving and worshipping the only enemy who ever like a snake in the grass raised his head or shook his fist in the face of God, man’s puny little ego. Ego will be dealt with to be sure. The story got that part right but the good news is we do not need to wait a thousand years for that to happen. We can chose to follow our higher best angels, our higher, best self right now. And if we feel ourself slipping back into old ego habits we need just stop and think, “What would my higher best self think and do?” Then think and do that. Don’t be an ego/satan worshipper. Let Love have its perfect way in everything.
