The Time Traveler’s Wife

I have a particular fondness for books and movies that deal with time travel. We are all travelers through Time and Space, I think. One of my favorite time travel books and movies is, “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” I have seen the movie so many times that I almost have it memorized. I try to keep a copy of the DVD with me always so that I can rewatch it again and again. In most cases one reading or viewing of a book or a movie is enough but others you just cannot seem to get enough of.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is one of those in the second category and I recommend it highly to others and even like to give it to friends. A week ago I met some new friends, Robert – the writer,  his wife Jenna – the opera singer, and their two lovely children. I like to believe that my family is everyone and so I am trying to get to know as much of my family as I can as I journey through time and space. I got to speak with Robert the most and our shared interest in writing and in all things regarding the UK (United Kingdom), he is from Wales, gave us much to talk about. When I heard that Jenna was an opera singer I thought of The Time Traveler’s Wife for in the story the time traveler’s mother is an opera singer. Sadly he sees her die as a boy when he first discovers that he has the ability to travel in time. In fact an older version of himself travels back to comfort little Henry and to remind him that everything is going to be alright.

One of the scenes that touches me most in the story is when an adult Henry traveling back in time meets his mother on the elevated train in Chicago. He says to her, ” I love you, I mean I love your music.” She smiles thinking him a fan and then he says, “I have met a girl and I feel safe for the first time since I was a boy.” She smiles again and as they part she tells him, “Be sure to tell that girl how you feel about her.” It is such a tender scene and for those of us who have outlived our mothers what we would not give to be able to spend a few moments with them again sharing what is happening in our lives and basking in their loving smile.

I found a copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife that also included The Notebook that I plan to give to my new brother and sister. I hope that they will enjoy it as much as I did. Oh, yeah I had to watch it again before giving it to them. I don’t know about you but I would much rather receive a book or a movie that the person giving it to me has taken the time to read or view. Half the fun of reading or seeing a good book or movie is being able to share it with someone else who knows and loves it too. I encourage everyone to see or to read The Time Traveler’s Wife.

David White
