Business As Usual

Blog 266 – 04.05.2016

Business as usual is often meant as a derogatory (negative) statement that puts down both business and the particular thing being talked about. I don’t think business is any more evil or wrong that money is. Money is not the root of all evil. That is actually a misquote. The actual line is, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Money is the value we place on someone’s time, service or the product that is produced or sold.

Money is a measure of our activity or busy-ness, business. Business as usual is what people expect to pay or be paid for their efforts or ingenuity or the product or service they deliver or wish to buy. Ideally we expect to pay a little extra for products or services knowing that those who deliver the same must make a profit or they cannot stay in business to serve us or provide that product the next time we want it. A smart business person takes good care of his or her customers for they are his or her livelihood and true business success depends upon repeat customers and word of mouth advertising is the best and most effective advertising.

Business as usual often gets a bad name because customers feel cheated or short changed by unscrupulous business people. People without scruples or a sense of fair play do not deliver a service or product worth the price. A true business person always delivers “extra value” or “extra service” or both. The sales pitches that grab our attention best are those that use the line “And that’s not all.” They always have a special bonus benefit for the buyer.

Successful people in business treat every customer or client as a V.I.P. – Very Important Patron – ” My favorite customer.” I hope you will begin to look for and expect that “little extra” in all your business dealings till business extraordinary becomes the new business as usual.
