My Have Times Have Changed
Many conservatives look back with fondness to the nineteen fifties as a golden age. It must have seemed so to many after the Great Depression, World War Two and the Korean War had ended. Even the Eisenhower Republicans had gotten the message regarding what had gotten us through those difficult times and helped us emerge as a great nation.
In his final speech to the nation before leaving the Presidency Eisenhower warned us about the military industrial complex. In another famous quote he wisely said that every dollar spent on armaments meant one dollar less to feed a hungry child or help a struggling person. As a young man I thought conservative Republicans had a lot to offer. But somewhere along the way tax cuts for the rich, government well-fare to support the oil industry, the military industrial complex, and big business became a redistribution of wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich.
All three branches of the government are currently controlled by the Republicans and we can see what they are doing with that power, enriching themselves. If there is a free and fair election this November many believe the current trajectory will be changed. Plans to interfere with state-run elections, to deny large swaths of those entitled to vote the right to vote, or to claim unsubstantiated voter fraud if their candidates do not win are already in the works.
Our Republican controlled Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United, which would be more aptly named Rich Oligarchs United, that corporations have the same rights as and individuals allowing rich donors to interfere in our elections legally, they also overturned Roe v Wade though without exception those conservative Supreme Court judges in there Senate confirmation hearings testifying that Row v Wade was established law and would not be reversed. The highest court in the land has made a mockery of the rule of law by failing to disclose gifts from wealthy contributors and by failing to recuse themselves from cases involving companies controlled by those donors. They like the felon and rapist President they protect arrogantly act as if they answer to no one, but they answer to us, the voters, who still have the Constitutional power to remove these public servants from office.
It is our duty to do so. I hope a blue wave changes the political landscape this fall and that the process of removing the name and influence of one Donald J. Trump who I think will be totally amazed how quickly and thoroughly he is forgotten.
My how times have changed folks will say then.
