One Recurring Theme

In the past eleven years of daily blogs I have returned to favorite themes more than a few times. I suppose like many folks my age there are favorites stories that come to mind and that some of the things that I have learned along the way I am more inclined to want to share again and again.

One of those recurring themes that ranks high on my play list is, I believe, one of the most important discoveries of all. Many take a lifetime or perhaps several to figure out their secret identity, just Who and Whose they truly are.

Jesus asked the boys once, “Who do men say that I am?” And the boys answered in so many words that some said this one others someone else. Then Jesus asked them, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter piped up, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God!” A favorite song when I was a young made said, “Till you find him in the mirror, you’ve got a long way to go.”

One woman sang of her own joyous self-discovery, “I have been all around the world, but I’ve never been to me.” Deep down inside we have known all along. The clues have always there. Our secret identity was never such a great secret, like Superman disguised as Clark Kent so obvious to anyone paying attention. A pair of glasses, really?”Is that you in this Foster Grants?”

One final Jesus and Simon Peter story along the same theme goes that at the last supper Jesus was telling the boys what was about to take place, how one of them would betray him and all would deny him. Simon Peter, always quick to speak up, said, “Though everyone else betrays and denies you, I will never.” Jesus answered Peter, “Before the cock crows twice you will deny me thrice.” But then gave Peter some hope as he went on to say, “But when you are converted go and comfort your brothers.” I think the phrase rendered “when you are converted” would better be expressed by the phrase “When you remember Who and Whose you are.”

I do not think Jesus came to save us or to convert us as much as to just remind us of our shared secret identity. He said once to the boys toward the end of his journey in space and time, “As I am so are you in this world.” Much of what is attributed to Jesus I think the New Testament writers got wrong, but this I think they got right.

Are you going to believe what others say about who you are or are you going to figure it out for yourself? Happy hunting.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
