A New Day, A New Month, A New Thought

One of the most encouraging phrases that I say to myself in my daily mantra is: “This is the day that the Lord and I have made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” My Christian friends are often disturbed by my rejection of many of the teachings of my youth and early adulthood. My life journey is similar to many of my generation who have come to see religion not the answer it promised to be, but the root cause of many if not most of our problems. I still believe in a higher power, my higher best self, encouraging me to think bigger better thoughts.

Too many religious folks see the failures of their leaders and themselves to live up to their beliefs as blips on the screen, anomalies instead of symptoms of a way of thinking that just does not work for most people. If what you believe is still serving you by all means keep the faith. But if you find it does not, discard those beliefs. It is not backsliding, apostasy, or in any way a crime to change your mind. That is what exposing ourselves to new information is supposed to do.

This is a new day, a new month, requiring some new thoughts. In three days we in the U.S.A. will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of our Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. In that 250 years we have changed our minds more than a few times. Nothing is ever so good that it cannot be improved upon. Take Tide detergent for example. If it had really been new and improved as many times as the advertisers say it would be perfect.

No religion is perfect, nor are we. I have long believed that religion is an attempt to make sense out of inexplicable things. As we get new information our beliefs should change. Have you changed your mind about anything lately? Give it a try. Changing one’s mind is not as the saying goes just a woman’s prerogative.
