“My Two Cents Worth”

There was an expression that I heard as a boy that was already dated because even at that time there was not much one could buy for two cents. Since they are no longer making the penny soon the saying will seem even more dated. The phrase was “Putting in your two cents worth” and usually referred to unsolicited comment or advice that the receiver of same placed little value on.

Another expression along the same vain was, “No more comments from the peanut gallery please.” The peanut gallery was the children’s or cheap seats at the circus. The Howdy Doody Show, early children’s TV, used The Peanut Gallery more respectfully. Doctor Spock had written a book on raising children in which he disputed the old saw that children should be seen and not heard.

Even Jesus seemed to think that everyone should be heard saying that even out of the mouths of babes comes wisdom. I remember trying to tell my son when he was young that even the down and out person panhandling on the street knows things that we do not and if we listen we might learn a valuable lesson.

This daily blog is me trying to share my take on life, lessons learned, encouraging words, I hope. For what it’s worth, on a good day that might be a bit more than two cents, perhaps even more than two bits. (That’s a quarter for you youngsters.)
