Rainy Days and Nights

Rain gets a bad rap from many folks. I am not one of them for “I love the rainy nights” and “rainy days and Mondays (never) get me down.” Rain is the water of life and places that get little are brown deserts and those that get the most are green with growth.

Over the years, I have written more than a few tributes to rain, but none more compelling that a story that a dear departed friend told of his boyhood in the dry West Texas town of San Angelo.  He said that his home town got so little rain that when it rained people stopped whatever they were doing just to watch it rain.

For a time I lived and worked in the high desert plains of Wyoming with its buttes, sage brush, and dry grass. You could see rain storms coming for many miles and most of them dropped their rains on the other side of the mountains. The only time I saw the area around Baggs, Wyoming green was for a few days after the snow melt in mid-June. It was a different world so full of green grass and flowers everywhere.

We’re expecting a lot of rain in East Texas over the next week to ten days and I for one am thrilled at the thought.
