Visions of Grandeur

Much has been said and written about our Dear Leader regarding a painting he posted yesterday and then took down because it received a loud out-cry of opposition. We used to say of people who expressed an overly high opinion of themselves that they were suffering from “visions of grandeur” but along with one of my favorite authors, Louise Hay, I think most of our problems stem rather from a lack of love for ourselves and not an over abundance.

Like the fictional superhero in The Boys, Homelander, behind the Narcissist’s need for adoration is a deep lack of love for themselves. This a classic symptom for those who sadly did not receive enough love as children. Donald John Trump does not love himself enough, and so he wants us to worship him, he wants to see himself as the most beloved President ever, he pictures himself as the only one who can “save” us.

People who run for President of the United States have to have pretty big egos granted, but picturing one’s self as Jesus and being surprised when others think you might have lost it is I think an indicator that perhaps you have. I have never voted for Trump, yet I confess that years ago on a vacation to Atlantic City with my wife and then teenaged son that I was impressed by his Taj Mahal Casino, still solvent then. I never watched his TV show on NBC, The Apprentice, still I thought him a successful businessman and entrepreneur, an image he has carefully crafted and sold for many years.

Some in President Trumps MAGA base that contains many Evangelical Christians were disappointed by the picture and Facebook and the news outlets were alive with critical reactions to it yesterday. Donald Trump was taught by his mentor, famed legal adviser of Communist hunter Senator Joseph McCarthy and defense attorney for the crime families of New York City, Roy Cohn, that “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” I think perhaps even Roy, were he still alive, might qualify that quote a bit.

Posting one’s mug shot proudly or holding up a Bible while asking a General to order U.S. troops to shoot peaceful protesters are I think both going too far, yet even some of Donald Trump’s most devoted followers are questioning his portrayal of himself as Jesus. Many of these same folks were quite upset with John Lennon when he said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ, but even John, to my knowledge never claimed to actually be the Savior of the World.

Me either, just

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
