Happy 13th Birthday, Carter

Today is my nephew Carter’s thirteen birthday, if he and his family were Jewish instead of Christian they might be celebrating a Bar Mitzvah for him.

Pictured above, a couple of years ago, is Carter with his beloved Great Grandma Betty seated next to him and on the other side of his crazy uncle (every family has at least one) is his lovely grandma Sarah. Family is so important. We all need a support system and family and friends are that support system. The old John Wayne cowboy myth of pulling yourself up by your boot straps and standing alone is just that a myth that we should discard with all the other childish beliefs that are no longer serving us.

I have allowed myself to miss too many family get togethers because my wife did not want to go, but I have decided I need to keep those ties strong and working for my own mental health and well being.

It seems that even a crazy uncles can have a moment of insight occasionally. I am going to try to dress a little more conservatively for the birthday party today. After all, Carter is thirteen today and a young man stepping into adulthood needs no clown at his party. Well, I have an idea for a crazy birthday gift. Tune in tomorrow to see if my gift was a big flop or the hit of the party. Crazy uncles can afford to take a few risk. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White

Here is Carter at another family gathering a couple of years ago with that snappily dressed uncle again.
