Give Hope A Chance

Some people think hope is a dangerous and disappointing thing. I, on the other hand, think that hope is one of the most important ingredients to happiness and fulfillment. Yesterday, I quoted Snoopy and Woodstock that to keep looking up is the secret of life. Hope is why we look up. The sun, the moon, and the stars offer us light, they offer us hope for a better brighter day and a brilliant starry night.

This morning as I took my hour walk before sun rise I keep reminding myself to keep looking up. It is a bad habit that we allow ourselves get into walking around looking down. It not only runs our posture, but counterintuitively makes us less balanced and surefooted. Our heads weigh approximately twenty pounds and hanging our heads out over the front of our bodies makes us off balanced and more prone to stumble and fall. We think looking at our feet helps us to avoid trips and falls but we are supposed to look where we are going – not downward but ever upward and onward.

One of the most upbeat and hopeful songs that I recall hearing as a boy had these words, “One glad morning when this life is o’re, I’ll fly away.” I no longer believe in pie in the sky in the sweet bye and bye, but I do believe there is still plenty of reasons to be hopeful and to look up, as many as the stars in the sky. Sailors lost at sea looked up to the stars believing that they would guide them home, so do I.

Hope springs eternal.
