Thirty-Five Years and Counting

On this day thirty-five years ago Linda Lee Stokes and David James White were wed in Houston, Texas at the Harris County Courthouse Annex on Shepherd Drive. As FDR said. “A day that will live in infamy.” No, I tease, it was a happy day and I am forever glad and grateful that we shared that day and all the others since.

We have had our trials, disappointments, and disagreements, still do but we are still together and that is quite an accomplishment. Linda’s parents celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and ten or more after it until Dad Stokes died. My own Mom and Dad had forty-seven wedding anniversaries, my dad passing of a heart attack or stroke five months into their forty-eighth year together.

Linda and I once wondered if we would live long enough to see our son grown. We did and last year he and his wife had a baby girl making us grandparents. We both hope to hang around as long as we can to watch her grow up. We both have a friendly bet going on who will outlive the other. I fully intend on it being me and not for the selfish you might think. Much as I want to see my granddaughter grow-up and watch my son realizes his dreams. Linda is my Baby and I want to make sure that she is taken care of and I think that is a job that I can do better than anyone else.

Happy Anniversary, Baby!

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
