But Most of All Kind
There is a phrase in my daily manta that goes , “I am patient, I am persistent, but most of all I am kind.” Kindness says a lot about who we are and who we hope to be. There are also many things, two in particular – the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches, that can block the flow of kindness from getting to our heart and flowing out to others.
We must be on our guard to prevent these blockages from occurring and diligent to remove them when they do. I am convinced that most of the meanness in this world stems from the pursuit of riches and power. Short cuts are taken, people are hurt, and the heart becomes hard. “It’s just business” people say when they want to excuse callous and unkind acts.
I recall a lesson that the ghost of businessman Jacob Marley tried to share with his surviving business partner Ebenezer Scrooge. When Scrooge tried to say that he had just been a good businessman, Jacob replied, “Mankind was my business.”
History is littered with wars and atrocities started and committed by people who forgot in all their pursue for riches and power that being kind was their most important business. One act of kindness can change the world for the better. In all our being let us remember to be kind.
