Nice And Easy

We create so many stressful and difficult situations for ourselves and others when we fail to follow Ole Blue Eyes’ advice in today’s song. The Protestant work ethic is really just a rich man’s scheme to increase productivity and profit margins from his workers. Working hard like it is forever crunch time does not produce a better product or service. The reverse is actually true. And thinking of employees as just another resource to be used up and replaced goes against Jesus’s two prime directives, yeah three: “Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Jesus went on to talk about how the religious leaders of his day were hard task masters laying heavy burden on people but being themselves unwilling to touch with a little finger any of those tasks. He went own to say “My yoke is easy and my burden is light” meaning that he would always take the lion share of the load upon his own shoulders.

What is driving you to work so hard, some unreasonable boss? The God of Creation as described in the first chapters of Genesis is an angry and unforgiving God who curses man saying that evermore we must earn our living by the sweat of our brow. It is an absurd story with an equally absurd conclusion that life is meant to be hard so get used to it. Ridiculous, life is meant to be good and nice and easy.

Nice and easy does it every time, like the man says.
