Never Enough
I have written several blogs on this same theme and here is yet another one. I confess I am not sure which direction this one will go. I have written that being satisfied can be a good thing and also that it can be a denial of the desire of our higher best self for more.
Today’s song is from the Greatest Showman. P.T. Barnum like Donald J. Trump has been portrayed by many as the Greatest Showman and by as many if not more as the Greatest Snowman. Whatever you think of these two men, I think we can agree that Never Enough is their credo and personal motto.
I read somewhere that some are considering making it illegal to amass wealth beyond a certain level. Prohibitions seldom ever work especially with the rich and powerful who always seem to find ways around the rules. Democratic government is always a dicey proposition trying to curb this appetite of individuals for amassing more and more money and power.
Today’s song says, “Towers of gold are still too little. These hands could hold the world but it’ll never be enough.” Jesus warned that the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches will if allowed always prevent us from seeing the best in ourselves and others. In his parable of “The Barn Loser” (Pardon the Pun) he concludes with a rhetorical question, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul in the process.” P.T. Barnum and D.J. Trump are not the only examples of desire and greed gone unchecked. The P.T. stood for Phineas Taylor And the D.J. for Donald John but historians might interpret those initials as Pretty Terrible and Dishonest John respectively.
Showmen and Snowmen have one thing in common and that is coming up with new ways to fleece the poor and make themselves richer and richer thereby and even having having most going away smiling and saying, “What a show that was, worth every penny.” And then coming back for more, never enough indeed. When will we ever learn?
