I Know I Need To Be In Love
I love the line in today’s song, “I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world and fool enough to think that’s what I’ll find.” For years I thought I had those words memorized perfectly as I sang along with Karen and Richard Carpenter, yet when I looked up the lyrics to practice before recording my karaoke style cover I realized that all those years that I had been singing, “I know I ask affection of a quite imperfect world and fool enough to think that’s what I’lll find.”
If you are, as I was, asking for affection of this quite imperfect world your best chance of finding it is to be the answer, to be the love you seek. Or as a wise little boy once told his grandma, the only mother he knew, when he overheard her telling my wife that she had trouble making friends: “Mommy, it’s easy to make friends, all you have to do is act friendly.” I remember thinking, “Out of the mouths of babes is wisdom.”
The founders of this great nation realized that the original founding document, The Articles of Confederation, was not sufficient to kept the nation together so using the excuse of revising it at the second Continental Congress they decided to risk charges of treason and through it out completely and wrote a new Constitution for the United States of America. In the opening line they gave their reason for this risky move, “In order to form a more perfect union…”
It was love of country that made them take that chance.
Love is always a risk, a gamble, but the only way to move closer to a more perfect union, a more perfect world is be the love we seek. Another poet once wrote, “Perfect love casts out fear.” And yet another, “Faint heart never won fair lady.” If you love someone let them know, let it show.
