How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You

Long before he played the sheriff determined to catch Burt Reynolds in Cannonball Run, and long before he made famous the catch phrase, “You’re in a heap of trouble, Boy” Jackie Gleason made famous another catch phrase, “How sweet it is.” Today’s song from James Taylor’s greatest hits goes a step further describing one of the sweetest experiences of all – being loved.

Hamlet in the famous Shakespeare play named after him asked the question, “To be or not to be” but there is no question which one would chose between the options – to be loved or not to be loved. The former would always win out if there even were such contest.

A quote from a little girl who answered her mother’s question, “Why do you love me” comes to mind. the little girl wise beyond her years replied, “I guess I love you because you loved me when I was too little to love you back.”

When my first granddaughter, Emma Grace, first arrived a little over seven months ago I told her dad and mom, “Emma is going to teach you so much more than you will ever teach her.” I spoke from experience for almost forty-four years ago a little girl named Emily Elaine came into my life and taught me more than I ever taught her. I dedicate today’s song to all the Emily’s and Emma’s in the world who have taught us so well how sweet it is to be loved.
