Holly Holy

“All that we hold holy” is an expression of what we believe sacred, worth living for, worth dying for. For some years now I have carried in my pocket the heart-shaped talisman pictured above.

What we deem to be holy says a lot about us. My song today is a Neil Diamond hit and evidently a person named Holly was very holy to him. Most of us have put a name to holy and believe that name is something that helps us to realize that we too are holy and whole.

“Sing it out, sing it strong, sing a Song of Songs.” That last is the title to the most erotic book in the Bible, The Song Of Solomon. It is a book loaded with imagery of physical love. I recently posted Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah, my cover of it anyway. That song has the baffled king David singing in his loudest voice:

“I did my best, it wasn’t much

I could not reach so I tried to touch

I told the truth, I didn’t try to fool ya

And even though it all went wrong

I’ll stand before the Lord of Song

With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah.”

To that and to today’s song I can only add my own amen and hallelujah.
