Garden Party

Trying to please everyone is an impossible task. Rick Nelson grew up on TV in the nineteen-fifties on the Ozzie and Harriet Show. He became a popular teenaged idol rock star. Fame at such an early age must have had its moments of high adulation and low isolation. Rick toured with a new band, a new look, and a new sound later in life, but never again achieved the fame and wide spread acceptance that he had known in his youth.

Today’s song was his last big hit and tells the story of a garden party that he was invited to where the guests were mostly disappointed that he no longer looked the same nor sounded the same. The lesson he learned from that party is that, “You can’t please everyone, so you gotta please yourself.” Is that selfish or self defense?

Another of those good bits from the Bible comes to mind, “Do not let the world press you into its mold, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that perfect will of God.” And what is that, but that I be me and you be you. Bill Shakespeare added his two cents, “To thine own self be true and thou canst be false to no man.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
