From A Distance

At the end of one of my favorite movies, An Unfinished Life, Mitch shares with Einar a dream that he had of flying. He says he flew so high that he could see where the blue turns to black and that from that distance it looked like there was a reason for everything.

In the story of the Jesus transfiguration, he is met by two other glowing figures, Moses and Elijah on a mountain top. This is much like the Darth Vader funeral pyre scene with glowing Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader), Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. In Jesus story the disciples miss the meaning of what they saw. The boys want to build three shrines where pilgrims could come and worship all three glowing figures that they saw transfigured there. Jesus explains that though things might seem more clear on the mountain tops life is meant to be lived down in the valley where the cares and difficulties of life and the deceitfulness of riches are often so confusing.

We cannot always fly high above our problems but I believe that through meditation we can learn to still our heart and mind and observe life from a little distance. From a distance it is possible to see more clearly that there is as Mitch, Yoda, Jesus and Bette agree, a reason for everything.
