Forever And Ever, Amen

Today’s song reminds me of a line from another country song that asks the important question: “If love never lasts forever, what’s forever for?”

I realize that I have often and even recently taken the other side of this question and even made a point of mocking the fairytale ending, “And they live happily ever after” but love makes me want to believe in forever so much that one afterlife is just not enough for me.

I believe that we get to have countless lives where we can play out every possible scenario. Another country song that I will be posting much later, The Highwayman, states my position quite well. Fanciful, you say, perhaps but it makes a lot more sense to me that the dead dog theory or the forever floating on a cloud theory.

One of my dad’s favorite TV shows in the early fifties starred actor Hugh Marlowe playing a triple spy. The title of the book the screen plays were based upon was, I Led Three Lives. I think we get to live far more than three lives and that in those multitude of lives that “I’m gonna love you forever, Amen.”
