Feels Like Home To Me

I believe that we are all weary travelers seeking shelter and how wonderful it is to find that heaven, that home, in the eyes and arms of another. “And they lived happily ever after” is a fairytale ending and this life may be many things, but a fairytale is seldom if ever one of them. Even the loveliest and most accepting eyes and arms are only with us for a time. Even those deepest in love eventually part ways on this journey.

Of course the romantic, the theologian, the optimist in all of us wants to believe that there is an after life or lives where we get to act out these love stories again and again. Wouldn’t that be heaven.

The Randy Newman song that I share today says so well what most of us travelers in time and space are looking for – that feeling of belonging, of being home. We have all even if only briefly and seldom met strangers along the way that carried heaven and home with them in their hearts and shared that feeling with us.

The two opposing factions in Jesus day, the Sadducees and the Pharisees (the conservatives and liberals of their day), were always trying to get Jesus to say something that would put him at adds with the people. They were so jealous of Jesus popularity. Sadducees were sad you see because they did not believe in heaven and the Pharisees were not very fair you see because they thought they were the only ones good enough to get to go there. In front of Jesus adoring crowd the two opposing parties asked Jesus what he believed about heaven and he told them, “The kingdom of heaven is within you.”

In your journey home remember that Dorothy Gale of Kansas learned that the short cut home was simple, all she had to do was click her heels three times and say, “There no place like home.” Jesus would say “Go within.”

Maybe my dad’s joke at the table when we had company was more spot on than we realized at the time. He would smile and say, “If you’re not a home, you ought to be.” Share your heart, your home, your heaven with some other weary pilgrim today.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
