Are You Lonesome Tonight?
Tonight at midnight the old year will end and a new one begin. It is tradition to spend that moment sharing a kiss with someone you love. Today’s Elvis song asks the question, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Many will be tempted to answer yes, but before you do consider this – the one who knows and loves you best is ever with you, your higher best self.
In the Genesis creation story we are told that after God made man from the dust of the earth and named him Adam after the red clay from which he was formed that he brought all the animals to him and that Adam named them, but found no counterpart, no ying to his yang. The story goes on that the Creator caused a deep sleep to come over Adam and that he took one of his ribs and made a dream girl companion for Adam.
Woman was no afterthought, no last minute design change. Only a man could event such a story. Regarding all the animal creation it was said, “Male and female created he them.”Mankind is no exception to that rule. It is like the silly question, “Which came first the chicken or the egg?” Neither came first for the one was always an integral part of the other.”
Someone asked me the other day where the term “significant other” came from. I said it was one of those attempts to be politically correct like referring to your spouse as “your better half.” In one of my favorite holiday specials, Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol, there is a song, “There Is A Hand For A Hand In The World.”
As one year ends and another begins, take comfort that you are not alone, nor have you ever been. May the myth of isolation never move you anymore for you are, have always been, and will ever be perfectly loved.
