Charlotte’s Web – Chapter 1

For the next twenty-two days I will be reading a chapter a day from the E.B. White classic tale of an extraordinary little pig. In the very first chapter Fern saves a little runt pig from her father’s axe and is given charge of him to care for and to raise, her father thinking to teach her how much trouble and extra work a little runt pig can be.

Vern’s brother Avery rising late for breakfast and finding Fern has been given a little pig to raise asks if he can have one too. Dad says, “No, only early risers get pigs.” Sounds like the saying about early birds and worms.

From the first moment Vern sees her little pig she says, “He’s perfect.” Love it would seem not only makes us real, a.k.a. The Velveteen Rabbit, but it also makes us perfect in the eyes of the beloved.
