Making It Count
As a child I was taught to sing, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” I no longer believe many of the things that I was taught as a child. Those beliefs long ago failed to serve me so I discarded them. That is a good rule about beliefs, letting them go when they cease to serve. Sometimes at every age we need to be reminded to let our light shine, to make it count.
Oh, I know it is unlikely that my little light will shine brightly into every dark place. But if can encourage even one or a few to keep on keeping on, that is reason enough to keep my batteries charged and to shine my light. Celebrities are like those bright shining stars that can be seen high in the night sky and it was by them that great ships were once steered. But it was the lower lights on the rocky shores that guided those same ships safely into port.
We cannot all be shining stars whose roles and lives are regaled and recounted to their multitude of fans and admirers. But we can all be lower lights and make our lives count. We can let our light shine. And in the end have said of us what Jesus said of his cousin, John the Baptizer: “Did we not rejoice in his light.”
Keep on shining.
