Once Upon A Time

Many fairytales begin with “Once Upon A Time.” So many of our own personal fairytales like the nineteen-eighties time travel series, Quantum Leap, have us traveling back in time in our minds trying to “put right what once went wrong.” Memories can never do that, in fact most time travel stories postulate that even if time travel were possible that it would only be as observers and that we could not change the past. The ripples of even a small change could possibly disastrously effect today.

Time traveling in our minds is only safe or sane if we forget trying to change the past, accept it, and learn as much as we can from it. A wise man once said that they who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Recorded history is fraught with inaccuracies. It is a truism that the winners get to write the history books and often there is a lot of cover-up and the losers are always portrayed as “the bad guys.”

The very phase “bad guys” always brings to mind some lines from a seventies love song, “There ain’t no good guys. There ain’t no bad guys. There’s only you and me and we just disagree.” It may very well be that even the history books are mostly fairytales. The happy endings only for the winners.

Let us write together a shared history that is a win-win scenario for us all. What a love story that would make with a real happily ever after ending.

Your friend and fellow traveler in time and space,

David White
