The Unshakable Truth Will Free Us
“And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” Still ole skeptical Pilate asks, “What is truth?” There is it seems at the root of all lies a bit of self-deception. A good con-man as all great magicians and politicians knows audience participation is key to making even a great lie believable.
One of the last century’s most well-known and successful liars wrote in his book years before he came to power, “The bigger the lie you tell, the more people will believe it.” The twentieth century created a lot of liars and lies that continue many of them to this day. But truth like sunlight is the best disinfectant.
When I saw today’s picture quote yesterday, I knew I would use it as a springboard to write a bit about truth and it’s power to set us free. It must get our full and undivided attention first. When truth gets a hold of you it will shake you till some beliefs are no longer comfortable companions.
I have been watching a new series called First Wives that takes three former First Ladies, Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Michelle Obama and tells their stories bouncing back and forth through time. These were three remarkable women who very likely would have made better Presidents than their famous politician husbands, women like Esther who were ideally placed to speak truth to power.
One last adage about truth: “The truth will out.” My middle school English teacher, Mrs. Sorrels, was a stickler regarding dangling participles and prepositions. “Out who or what?” I hear her asking. Why us and all untruths is the self-evident answer, but not till it has taken hold of and shaken this whole lying world to its core.
