Failures Are Only Lessons In Success Unless We Give Up

We have, all of us, failed at love. I recall a line from a Bob Seger song, Night Moves, “Working on mysteries without any clues.” But, our failures themselves are indeed the best clues to the great mystery that is love, that is life.

Much has been said and written about the magic of that first kiss, but practiced lips are those who most appreciate and can provide those kisses that are truly memorable. I dare say as you read that last line a particular kiss came to mind.

In one of my favorite coming of age movies a man with psychic ability tells a young boy that he will experience on the Ferris wheel that very night at a carnival a kiss by which all others will be judged and found wanting. Love’s first kiss can indeed make a compelling case. Still, I say it is the practiced and long anticipated kiss that is ultimately ensconced in the hall of fame in most cases and not the first kiss.

First kisses are usually fumbling and distracted with way too many competing questions. The confident kiss with undivided attention is the one that hits the mark.

Many kisses never materialize and of those that do many are failures, but as today’s title suggests: “Failures are only lessons in success unless we give up.” That reminds me of one of my favorite jokes about the Genesis creation story. It goes: “God made man, and then said, ‘I can do better than that’ and so he created woman.” Keep practicing, practice does indeed make perfect. The best kiss, the best laugh, the best day, is always yet to be.
