Not That Different

Some years ago a man wrote a book entitled Woman Are From Venus, Men Are From Mars, to show that often boy/girl relationships may seem like we are from different worlds. Opposites attract is not just true of magnets, but people too. I do not believe that we are half persons requiring another person to complete us, just half-blind to all we are perhaps and it is that hidden half we see in another that often awakens that other side of our self.

The war within us is not our inability to get along with someone else so much as it is accepting that that which we argue with most is our truth too. I have often quoted the Apostle Paul’s wise remark, “You, oh man, who judge another are guilty of the same thing.” Why else would any behavior bother us unless it were something about ourselves we did not choose to own?”

My darling and beloved wife keeps me in check. Just yesterday she questioned a remark she overheard me say. I said that she and I had always disagreed on more things than we agreed upon. She pointed out that was not true that we have always agreed upon more than we disagree upon. She is right, of course, I was exaggerating, which always reminds me of the story of the young man who was called out for exaggerating and told the one pointing out his weakness that he had cried barrels and barrels of tears over his problems, a remark that caused his friend to throw up his hands in despair.

We are not that different really nor ever that far apart on any point for we are mirrors within and without of the Universe. That is Who and Whose we are.
