Do You Know the Muffin Man?

One has yet to wonder just who exactly was the inspiration behind this little ditty, but whoever it was this song is one of those songs that stays in your head. Often times young parents are ready to pull their hair out as little voices repeat for the seeming thousandth time an oh too familiar refrain but trust me, I know from experience, you will wish in the not too distant future that you could hear that sweet little voice again singing even the most monotonous melody and words. To paraphrase a more adult song:

Angels are bending near

Sweet little voices to hear

Do not complain but cheer

To hear these voices dear.

Yes, many of us have come to know the Muffin Man and cannot but smile at this jingle about him and his sweet baked goods. Why, we can almost smell the warm goodness he as delivers his goods right to our door. Now, there is an old tradition that Covid has helped to revive, hot food delivered right to your door, I mean besides Chinese and Pizza. Those we could always get even if we lived miles from Drury Lane.

I hope you and yours are coping well and still wearing your masks and maintaining social distance. Some state governors, Texas and Mississippi in particular, announced yesterday that they are removing statewide mask mandates and allowing restaurants to go back to full service capacity on March 10th. Some health experts fear this is too much, too soon, and will end in a disastrous uptick in Covid cases and deaths. We have seen this happen after major holidays too many times already. To quote yet another song from my youth: “When will we ever learn, when will we ever learn?” Soon I hope.

I am, thanks to my nephew Gregory who is a nurse, scheduled this Saturday with my wife and our mom, to get our first Covid vaccination. No bumping the line, we are all three over sixty-five, but still getting an appointment has not been that easy. They say, by May the shots will be available to all. I hope our impatience to get back to our normal business as usual does not result in the premature silencing a lot more precious voices. We have, I think, stilled too many unnecessarily already. Let’s take it nice and easy, huh Frank?

Your friend and fellow traveler,
