The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – Chapter 13
“Pay no attention to the little man behind the curtain” is the line that Oz the Terrible yells when Toto pulls back the curtain on his fraud. We have all played The Great Pretender at one time or another and Jesus scolding rebuke of hypocrites has us all not uttering Amen so much as, “I am the man.” It seems Jesus biggest beef was with pretenders. To emphasize the point he said, “The harlots and the tax collectors will enter the kingdom of heaven before the hypocrites do.” This remark he directed at the religious folk of his day, the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Too many church folk today have the same problem that those religious folk back then did, as we say in Texas, “Too much hat and little or no cattle.” They are not real cowboys or cowgirls, just the drug store variety, full of braggadocio and empty of compassion and caring.
But, thank the Universe, there is hope even for them. Jesus does not say they will never enter into the kingdom of heaven just that others will get there sooner. I believe the reason is simple, harlots and tax collectors discover sooner that the warmth and security they desire is only to be had at home in heaven while the false pride of pretenders is a far more deadly sin and a nightmare harder from which to awake. But, we will all awake someday like Dorothy from this one of perhaps many dreams and when we do it will be in our own comfy bed, in our own room, in our heavenly home.
Whatever roles we have played in this story or any other, the one role we were always meant to play is the prodigal come home at last.
