The Three Little Pigs
This is one of the first stories that I ever recall being read to me as a boy and I can still see the illustrations of the first little pig’s straw house blown down by the big bad wolf, then the second little pig’s wooden house likewise, but the third little pig’s well built brick house standing strong with the third little pig and his two brothers with him safe inside.
The third little pig must have been a Boy Scout with their motto, “Be Prepared”, ever foremost in his thinking. None of us can predict the future entirely so it is impossible to be prepared for every eventuality, but we can count on rain and strong winds in our future so as the Bible story teaches we should not build our house on the shifting sands but upon the rock and as today’s story teaches us, we should use the strongest materials available to us.
We should also look inside ourselves to discover what we are indeed made of. It is said our bodies are made of star dust, but we are way more than our bodies for they are just houses that our spirits dwell in for a very short time. The life of stars is far far longer and the lights we see in the night sky are from stars many perhaps that burned out eons ago.
I believe the material universe in all it’s splendor is but a reflection of the marvelous spiritual universe behind and back of it. I am not a scientist nor much of a philosopher, really more a poet. But my poet’s heart has eyes that see even in this all too familiar tale of three little pigs an eternal truth – we are all in this together and though houses rise and fall, and big bad wolves come huffing and puffing, trying to blow everything apart and down, we are destined to never fail but to prevail.
Everyone of those lights in the night sky remind us of a million dreams yet to come true.
