Reflections Of My Life

The first of The Ten Intentions For A Better World, that I live by states:

“I refrain from opposing or harming anyone. I allow others to have their own experiences. I see life in all things and honor it as if it were my own. I support life.”

How much more simple and rewarding a life it would be for all of us if we saw everything and everyone around us as merely reflections of our own life. There is great evidence to support this thesis. In psychology it is called “projecting” but I prefer to think of it as reflecting. Seventies’ comedian Flip Wilson’s funny character Geraldine used to say, “What you see is what you get.” But I say – What you see is what you are. Now wait a minutes. Crazy Dave. Do you mean to say that all the bad behavior that I see, judge, and condemn in others is not entirely them but just a reflection of something in me? I do indeed, for we could not even recognize it in others if it were not in us as well.

I have used the following illustration many times. When I hear anyone say, “I can abide anything but a liar” I immediately make a mental note that that person has a problem telling the truth. Why else would someone else lying be such a problem for them. We all have told our share of whoppers, unintentionally and some even on purpose and with flare. The same is true for most all of us with all of the Seven Deadly Sins to some degree or another. I never killed anyone you might say. To that Jesus says, “If you hate someone in your heart you have committed murder.” Well, then I guess we are not a one of us off the hook then.

But let’s look at reflections from a more positive angle. All the good we see in others is all in us too. Whew, now you’re talking, not so crazy Dave. And here again as someone has said, “That I recognize all the good in you makes me feel better about myself for how could I recognize the good in you if there were not goodness in me too.”

Reflecting on my life and all the beauty around me I find I truly have had a wonderful life and I thank everyone of you for your part in it and as well my loving and infinite source – The Universe.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
