Thank You, Angel Mamas

Thank You, Angel Mamas

I believe that we all have within us the male and the female but also a proclivity or nudge if you will to identify as one or the other. Physical equipment issued at birth not withstanding we exhibit more the characteristics thought to be of one more than the other, more than the other. Having rather confusingly said that, I would like to say thanks you to all the Angel Mamas that I have known in my life. The first, Alene Florence Davidson White, who birth me, nursed me, loved me, and care for me for 49 years, 8 months, and 19 days, till life became too painful for her to bear and she took her own life. I hope she has a happier time of it on her next go round.

I would also like to thank my sweet aunts, and girl cousins who all loved me like a sweet mama too and always were kind and considerate to me. In this life I have not been privileged to have had a birth sister but I have had many sweet sisters nonetheless. Some I wished to be even closer too than that, marrying four. All four beautiful girls and women had and have tender and loving mama hearts. One has already passed and only one of the four never got to have children of her own but she for a while poured a lot of that sweet mama love out on me and has upon many others all throughout her life. And I never quite understood the jokes men tell about not being able to get along with their mothers-in-law for I love and have felt much love from all four of mine, sometimes even more than from their daughters, my wives.

It being, to me, still very much the month of Emily, I would like to say a special thank you to my dear departed daughter, Emily Elaine White, who though she never got to be a mommy, was a sweet one to every one she knew including me. I can hear her smiling saying, “Daddy, do you think that sentence was a bit too long?”

This mother-love manifests itself in so many wonderful ways, among which are loving teachers and nurses. I have been fortunate to have known many of these dear ladies too in my life. Why just the other day a skilled and caring Emergency Room Triage nurse performed a quite painful procedure on me that relieved a great deal more suffering and after grimacing and gritting my teeth thinking to myself she was a demon torturing me, I said to her that she was an angel. She said I must really be thankful and grateful to the one who taught her that procedure. And I nodding and smiling said, “Yes, Ma’am!”

From the time most little girls can walk they are loving their dollies, stuffed animals, and pets, and, yes, some of the more Tom Boy girls their trucks, climbing trees, and playing rough with the boys. But there is so much tenderness on the feminine side that we would all do well to get in touch and stay in touch with that side of things. I, for one, look forward to the day in the US of A when we grow up enough to elect a woman President. Heaven knows the guys have had their turn and have not always left us much better off for it. It is high time we had a leader with a fierce and loving mother’s heart to steer us in a better, kinder, more loving direction. That is my opinion but I could be wrong. Even so, I say thank you to all you Angel Mamas out there.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

Lover of women especially the sweet mama in each of you,

David White
