All I Ask Of You
Some love songs more than others touch us and haunt us, I think, because they speak to what most of us, if not all of us, want more than anything else. This song says that so plainly:
“Love me, that’s all I ask of you.”
I remember a popular song as barely a teenager that spoke to my teenaged angst. It said, “Oh, Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.” But I was and we all have had our motives and actions mistook and wrongly taken as well as we have those of others.
We all need to love and to feel loved. Sometimes, I think, we want and need that even more than air, water, or food to eat. And when we get the chance to feel the fullness of love given and received it is so good. As James Brown, once called the hardest working man in Rock and Roll, sang:
“So good, so good ‘cause I’ve got you!”
As a poet, let me take a shot at that too.
All We Ask
In every one of us
There is a deep abiding need
To love as we were made to,
To be loved in return we plead.
In every one of us
Though we may show it differently
All we ask or ever will
Is just to love and to be.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
Feel the love,
