Like A Breath Of Fresh Air

That phrase has always seemed an especially pleasant one. In my life I have like most of you stayed pretty active and except for fishing, walking, and biking always tried to keep busy. Those three calmer activities along with reading and watching movies have been the nearest things to meditation and prayer in my life. My dad was an avid outdoorsman and was in his element when he was in the woods hunting or in a boat or on a bank fishing. Some folks now of days are anti-hunting and anti-taking wild game or fish at all. I can enjoy both hunting and fishing with a camera or catch release just as well. It has never been for me about the catch or the kill but the quiet, the stillness, the natural surroundings, sounds, and smells. I learned that from my dad. He was at peace in nature he was at his best out there.

I remember on one occasion after I had left home and my life and relationships were all confused and in turmoil that my dad in one of the few letters he ever wrote me penned, “Son, you need to find your “resting place.” A very dear friend and elderly pastor told me about a cute advertisement that Westinghouse had for their new refrigerators many years ago when the old “ice boxes” gave way to electric refrigerators. In the picture there was a cute little furry bunny nestled in the vegetable crisper when a child opened the refrigerated door, in a print bubble the child is asking, “What are you doing in there?” And in a print bubble above the bunny’s head is the bunny’s lisp of a reply, “Isn’t this the westing house?” It seems not just cute bunnies but us people too need a resting place. My dad found his in the great outdoors. Many more have found theirs in a quiet space just focusing on their breathing or the beating of their heart.

You don’t have to look outside of yourself to find a breath of fresh air. Go within where you will find the true peace that passes understanding Someone who truly loves you will always meet you there in a secluded rendezvous spot design just for that purpose in the center of you. Take a deep breath and dive right in.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
