I Understand…

The urge to murder and to mayhem, being different, even as different as L,G,B,T,Q. If some of you cannot get your heads around some or all of that statement bear with me, I hope to make my point clear. If you choose to disagree that is fine but please hear me out. To relieve the tension a bit let me start with a joke. A fellow at work was told about one of his work mates being arrested for the brutal murder of his wife and remarked, “I do not condone such a horrendous act, but I understand.” Who among us has not at one time or another felt the urge to murder or to mayhem? Let me be more clear, who among us with parents, siblings, bosses, wives and children has not at one time for just a moment considered murder or mayhem? Be honest now. Without condoning we can understand all types of behavior for it is in us to know, why, indeed most everything if we think about it is in us for we have the mind of God, of Christ, of the Universe, of the entire human experience. It is in us and we can understand – we have only to try.

It does not even take much imagination we have only to compare whatever we confront with our own honest thoughts and impressions to understand even the most misguided behaviors. And there are factors that we are often amiss in considering. Did you know that often babies are born with no clear sexual indication and that doctors assign their sex in sometimes a very imprecise manner such as measuring the tiny length of a protrusion before surgically altering that baby’s future. Some babies actually are born with no chromosomal indication of either sex. I have believed for many years that the brain is the primary sex organ and its wiring is still pretty mysterious even to those who study it much.

The ten guidelines that I follow, called The Ten Intensions For A Better World, clearly state in the very first one that:

“I refrain from opposing or harming anyone. I allow others to have their own experiences. I see life in all things and honor it as if it were my own. I support life.”

No one is asking for yours or my approval of their opinions, tastes, or behavior but I think we all deserve a little peace, love, and understanding. Yes, even that person who has completely lost it and committed murder and mayhem. We, too, at least in our thoughts have done as much or worse and but for dumb luck, grace, or just just parting our hair the right way by accident have avoided being in their shoes or in their sights. Heaven help us all to be more understanding and less quick to pull the trigger on our brothers and sisters whomever they may be.

David White
