Home Is Where The Heart Is
Home it is one of the three most beloved words in the English language, mother and heaven being the other two. But what do we mean by “Home.” Some mean the place where they were born and grew up surrounded by mother, father, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Others mean where they were married, settled down, and raised children of their own. Still to some it is a person who occupies their thoughts or just a place where they hang their hat, and keep their extra clothes and things. As a traveling contract inspector, I am often asked how often I go home, and if I miss my home. My somewhat pat answer is that I believe that home is where the heart is and that I keep mine in my chest, carrying it with me wherever I go.
What I mean by that is that I am at home in my own skin. I have not always been and have spent the first half of my life “homesick” to one degree or another for my mama, my daddy, a girl friend, a wife or a child that I somehow thought of as home. To me it is not strange at all that those other two beloved English words, mother and heaven, are for many people synonyms for home. I believe, and call me crazy if you like, Crazy Dave, that the God of all the Universe has put in the center of us a piece of Him/Herself so that, like vampire dirt from where the vampire died, we can always have home with us. And, yes, I used the vampire dirt illustration just to see if you were still following me.
Last weekend I found two little brass colored lockets. I love lockets with loved ones pictures in them don’t you? Well, any way, I got the only two they had – identical, planning a special little gift for the two beautiful women who had my babies. I picked out just the right picture of myself and my daughter for Sandra and of myself and my son for Linda to remind them that along with a big piece of divinity, not the candy but the sweeter One, in our heart that there is also a big part of them and the precious creations/children our love created, along with all those I have dared to love in this life, including myself. Our hearts are way bigger and roomier than you might think. You are so romantical, Popeye. Not so much but a “homebody” of the strange and beautiful kind. You know the joke – say it with me – “You are strange and I am beautiful.” The two pictures on the blog today are the completed lockets, the front and inside. I wanted to share them with you too for you are beloved friends as well and if you are reading this there is definitely a place in my home, in my heart, for you. I am going to need to find a lot more lockets. Love to you all.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
