Thank You For Being A Friend

I love the theme song from the long time TV sitcom, The Golden Girls, called Thank You For Being A Friend. I learned yesterday that one of my long time friends is being treated for cancer. Never a good thing to hear. One of the songs on a mixed CD that my daughter Emily sent me before she passed with cancer over five years ago, that was a great comfort to me after her passing says, “I heard the news from a friend on the phone yesterday. The doctor gave him two weeks to live. I’d give him more if I could. You know that I would now.”

My friend got very upset with me over a difference of opinion some time back and I think he thinks he wrote me off because of it but it has not dimmed my affection for him nor my highest and best wishes for him and to him always. I hope the great line in the first friend song above will still be true for me and my friend:

“And when we both get older

With walking canes and hair of gray

Have no fear, even though it’s hard to hear,

I will stand real close and say…

Thank you for being a friend.”

Check out the first link if you’d like to hear all of the words sung by one of my favorite singers. Perhaps not the greatest voice but he tries hard. Ha, yeah, it’s little ole me. My card says singer, guess you can’t believe everything you see in print but as my new short cut for making all my intentions manifest faster says (modify it as you will for your own intentions) “I am a better singer every day, in every way.” The second link is Andrew Gold doing the song justice.

You may think, as a good friend, you need to say to me, “Don’t quit your day job.” Save you breath. I have already heard it and it will not slow me down at all. I plan to sing at your funeral, if you ask me nice, and if I live long enough to be confined to a nursing home to sing to myself and the other inmates and staff. I sing cheap – free, and it is worth every penny, and yes, I intend to keep my day job for the time being so any concert bookings you have in mind must be nights and weekends and make them early evenings as I rise early to write and post my blogs each morning. I am happy to sing for all occasions – weddings, store openings, wakes etc. I actually prefer wakes as my idea of a send off is a party with singing, dancing, and lots of good food, and drink – the way we ought to live and die, friends.

Oh, yeah, and thank you for being a friend and spending time with me.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

Singer of songs,

David White
