Like A Box Of Chocolates

Now and again for the time and focus that I put in trying to serve a fresh daily dose of encouraging, enlightening, or at least, I hope, entertaining words, I get an encouraging word back. Friday, I had a new friend in Morocco follow my blog and actually read sixteen of my past blogs and click “like” on several of them. Not exactly a signing bonus on a big book deal but more than enough pay for this writer, speaker, singer/songwriter, and teacher. As more and more people follow this blog here in the States and around the world I am ecstatic and if I never make a dime I already feel more that rewarded for my creative efforts. All my life I have wanted to contribute, to do something important, to be a philanthropist. Snicker if you like, I do not have Bill Gates great wealth to help others in a big way financially but what I do have I give lots of and daily and that is encouraging words.

Whether I write them, speak them, sing them, or attempt to teach them, the important thing is that they are reaching people and making some difference in the wide world. My notes in a bottle, as it were, are cast out into the ocean with the hope that someone will find them, read them, take them to heart, and be encouraged by them. Interesting word, encouraged, it means to be filled with courage, And courage means the absence of fear. And, yes, I know that many heroes say that courage is not the absence of fear but doing what you should do even if you are afraid. I never bought in to the multi-tasking myth. We can, I think only concentrate and do one thing right at a time. If you practice you can learn to do a lot of things well and fast but still only one at a time. If you try to do two or more things at once you are messing up as much as you get right or at least short changing the quality of your work. If you are afraid, fearful, scared you are not going to be a hero, you are probably going to get yourself or somebody else killed. I think real heroes are devoid of fear. Their mind is solely on the job at hand. The word says, “Perfect love casts out fear.” That is truly the best, the most encouraging word – Love.

I have described my blog as “love letters to my friends.” Do you really love us all, Dave? Yes, I do each and everyone of you. If I had the chance I’d meet you somewhere nice for a movie and a meal, my treat, and we’d laugh and talk till we both knew that even though we just met that we have been friends through all of this life and maybe countless others. We are brothers (girls too just more attractive, shapelier) you know, same father, same mother – Heavenly Father, Earthly Mother.

One of the great wise men of our time had a very wise and caring mother. She taught him that life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get. I hope that many will come to think of this blog like a box of chocolates too – you may not know exactly what is on the inside but you know it is covered with delicious chocolate, a taste most of use have a hankering for and that there is always something good inside each one.

I was taught that if you love somebody you give them flowers and chocolates. I love you all (even all you Yankees – that’s a bit of Southern humor) and I hope each of you comes to think that every word that I write, speak, sing or teach is meant just for you – for it is, as I am…

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
