The Ride Not The Brass Ring

Many are so focused on some illusive prize that they are not paying attention to the ride. I have a little motto that hangs on the wall of the small bathroom in my home on wheels that says, “Live In The Moment.” (Pictured) As self evident as it might appear we often act as if we have forgotten what we knew so well as children that life is best lived fully in the moment, one glorious moment at a time.

A song that I learned as a boy said not to borrow from tomorrow’s sunshine for it’s skies may turn to gray. Trying to live in the past is equally problematic or worse still wishing we could change it. Experienced time travelers know there is only one reason for traveling if even briefly into the past and that is to remember lessons that we might have forgotten or learn lessons that we might have missed entirely at the time. Beyond that we become trapped like Harry Potter looking into a glass reflecting a past vision of his Mom and Dad who died when he was a baby wishing for something he never got to know and forgetting all the good things that he did and even more importantly the wonders of now.

               The Prize

The gift is not a ring of brass
Woulda, coulda, shouldas pass
To see the gift look deep inside
Our gift’s today, enjoy the ride.

To try to live anywhere else but now is to miss this magic moment. And if we do, we miss tomorrow adding one more regret to the past. Forget the brass ring and remember the true prize is inside us and enjoying the present moment. Time travel to the past if you must but only for a break to relax, come back to the now, and just enjoy the merry go round.
