Words To Listen To And Live By

There is a literal explosion of words that we are bombarded with on any given day, sales pitches, religious and political persuasive pieces, and a host of other messages competing for our attention. How do we know what to listen to, what to take the time to hear, and which words to live by? There is but One Voice we know and trust and it is not some favorite Hollywood celebrity, politician, or preacher’s but the one voice, our own inner voice. Whenever we read or hear anything that rings true we hear that still small voice within us saying, “Amen, listen to that. This is something you can live by.” The Great “I Am” is always speaking to us in our own voice.

To listen too closely to any other voice except to try to hear in it the One, or to give ourself over completely to anyone else’s words or advice is to surrender the authority that was given to us to choose and direct our own path. Somewhere it is written, “You will hear a voice saying this is the way, walk in it.” And you will recognize that voice because it is yours. Another line comes to mind, “My sheep hear my voice and follow me.” The sheep analogy is not one of my favorites but that is probably because there seem to be so many voices claiming to be the true Shepherd’s voice. Again I repeat it is your own voice you can trust above all others. Have you found your voice? That term is usually meant to refer to one finding their true voice with which to speak but we cannot speak truly till we have first listened truly.

I fancy myself a writer but I have no illusions about being myself a great one but I know that the best and greatest writers are merely scribes jotting down what they have heard. All of our stories are only echoes of the great story and it is, girls and boys, a love story. It is a story written long ago in the first human heart and it has been passed on to each of us. It is the greatest wish of a writer to connect with his readers as it is the greatest wish of Inspiration to connect. Words have meaning. Take the word inspire, it means -“Spirit in you, or filled with spirit.” As indeed each of us is.

There are, Sports Fans, really only two voices to listen too and one of those is an imposter, a fake, a phony. Ego may even at times do a pretty good job impersonating your own voice but if we practice listening for the One Voice we will not be fooled. I do not claim to be a prophet, a mouth piece for God, but I do try to find and write the encouraging word and if ever you read or hear it in this place you can be sure of the Source. Just listen for your own inner voice saying, “That’s crap – disregard it.” or “That’s good stuff, listen to and live by that.”
