I Love You Best

One of my good friends likes to end texts and notes with the phrase, “I love you best.”
It used to scare me at first because I have and still do love a lot of people and frankly I am just getting started and no longer desire what I call “the choking kind” of love from the rhythm and blues song by the same name. If I am “In love” with anyone that person is me. If that sounds selfish so be it but not loving one’s self first and foremost is a far bigger problem than finding a “soul mate” or “prince or princess charming” could ever be. Relationships are hard but rest assured that you or I will never get any other relationship right till we get the one with ourself right first.

It is because and only because I love me best that I can love you and everyone that I love the very best I possible can. And as you see I have seen a lot more in my friend’s phrase than the scary meaning that I first attached to it. Which reminds me of a verse, “He who fears is not made perfect in love.” There is only one way to love and that is the best way we can, with all the stops pulled out,  and without fear. Some think that hate is the opposite of love. I do not think so. I happen to believe that love is the only thing that is real and all else is but illusion. Fear (An illusion) leads to hate (Another illusion). John Lennon wrote and sang, “All you need is love.” And I say, that is a good thing because love is all there is – and I love you best.
