Note to blog followers: I had intended to finish out the month with episodes from the book – Emily – The Little Girl Who Sang Her Song To Anyone Who Came Along but due to some difficulty re-posted previous blogs I am going to go ahead and begin posting some of the new things I have written ahead. I hope you enjoy.

A Traveler’s Tribute To The Driftless Area

(Submitted to Voice of the River Valley – A guide to people & events that inspire, inform, and enrich life in the Lower Wisconsin & Sugar-Pecatonia River Basins)

I am a traveling pipeline inspector by trade, quite a gig really, getting paid to travel the world and to just watch other people work. I have for over a year now been on assignment in The Driftless Area of Wisconsin and have seen this Lovely Lady wearing all her seasonal gowns. She is one beautiful lady and I have been quite awed by her. I have traveled all fifty states in the U.S., five Canadian provinces, and ten additional foreign countries and though all are remarkable in their own way none are more so than Wisconsin and The Driftless Area.

Fortunately the construction crew that I have been assigned to follow covers quite a lot of ground from Plain north to Cuba City south, from Juda east to Prairie du Chien west, and all points in between. I have gotten to see quite a lot of the breathtakingly beautiful Driftless Area. Most of the time my nightly resting place has been a 20 foot pull behind camper-trailer located at the Fireside Campground in Lone Rock but for the five months the campground was closed due to freezing temperatures I made my home at The Traveler’s Inn in historic Mineral Point.

Shorty after arriving in Mineral Point I saw in this publication that they were having a Film Festival in Mineral Point and that one of the movies featured was an independent film, The Driftless Area, starring the late brilliant young actor, Anton Yelchin, best known for his portrayal of Chekhov in the last Star Trek movies. I loved the Driftless movie, my winter in Mineral Point, and my year traveling the beautiful Driftless Area.

David White
