Thinking Out Loud
It is an expression that I have heard others and myself say often. But what do we mean when we also most apologetically say, “I was just thinking out loud.”? We could mean we were just thinking as we speak (Not a bad idea) or that we were just speaking as we think (An even better and more honest idea.) People who speak their minds often get a reputation as a bit strange. Children speak their minds till we teach them, socialize them, to parrot the appropriate and acceptable “newspeak” – the line Big Brother is pushing this week. Big Brother tends to classify Thinking Out Loud as a “thoughtcrime.” Time was or maybe never really was that children were taught to “think” for themselves. Maybe that is the real problem that we start out thinking for ourselves and are rapidly trained to not think, as the ole well known joke line goes about corporate cultures, political, educational, religious, scientific, etc. (It really works for all if not all the time, much, or at least some of the time.)
“THINKING: There’s no place for that here.”
I heard another one about a person who was always talking out loud to themself. By way of defense the person said, “Sometimes you have to talk to yourself to have an intelligent conversation. Ray Stevens, famous for his comic songs like, The Streak, Guitarzan, Ahab The Arab, and many others produced a religious album named after the title song called, Turn Your Radio On. One of my favorite cuts on the album is called Have Alittle Talk With Myself. Sometimes that is what we are doing when we call it “Thinking Out Loud.” I, for one, am all for it just as I am for singing out loud, or living and loving out loud. I don’t know about you, but I think I do some of my best thinking – out loud. These blogs are just me thinking out loud. And as much as I hope they find a larger audience and will encourage many others I write them really for myself.
You see, I believe that the quickest most sure fire way to change our world is to change our thinking. And nothing encourages me more to change my own thinking that some of the silly thoughts that I say out loud. Oh, sometimes, I surprise even myself with my nuggets of wisdom or an especially well turned phrase. But, I give my Higher Self the credit for those inspiring, uplifting words. The dumb sounding ideas and the misspelled words are all mine still I trust that even those will serve to encourage and uplift others out of the same old tired and depressing ways of thinking. But please waste no time or materials building monuments, temples, or starting religious or political movements in my name. And please no honorary degrees or titles for me. Friend and brother is the only title or honor I ever aspire to. As I have signed off most of these six hundred and sixty blogs, thus far, which is just nine thousand nine hundred and forty short of my goal of ten thousand blogs, I see myself always, no more no less…
Your friend and fellow traveler,
