The Tin Man Was Not Stupid

The Tin Man Was Not Stupid

If you could make one wish what would it be? It seems King Solomon and the Tin Man had at least one thing in common. The Tin Man asked The Wizard of Oz for a heart and Solomon asked God for a “discerning heart.” I wonder if they both heard the song, “You Gotta Have Heart.” Whether they did or not they both knew that what makes a true man and a true king is a heart. I have spent the last couple of blogs talking politics – One of those No – No subjects to mention among friends for it often starts arguments that lead to hard feeling. Friends should be able to disagree agreeably and to have and express their opinions on a wide range of topics. When did we get so touchy that everyone has to agree with us or we “unfriend” them?

The Tin Man was not stupid nor Solomon for asking for a heart. Even though they are easily broken, they mend, and if we let them they grow thereby and are made even more tender toward others. I was just listening to Celine Dion singing How Does A Moment Last Forever from Disney’s recent reincarnation of The Beauty And The Beast. The line that touched me most was when she sang:

“We have to know some bad times or our lives are incomplete.”

What life was ever lived that was not touched by sadness, badness, and heartbreak? But these are the things that bigger, more loving hearts and sweeter, grander dreams are made of. Just beware asking for a heart for they always come with tears. Even the Tin Man confesses to Dorothy when she is leaving to go back to Kansas: “I know that I have a heart now ’cause it’s breaking.”

Almost five years ago one of the sweetest hearts that I have ever known stopped beating. That was my little Sweetheart, my darling daughter,  Emily Elaine White. Her heart kept on beating after most everything else had stopped, just my Baby Girl’s way of reminding us all how important a heart is. July first, the beginning of the month I call Emily, I will again be posting episodes and memories of the thirty two years of Emily. I call the story, The Little Girl Who Sang Her Song To Anyone Who Came Along. Watch for it here.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
